Elon Musk aims to rebrand Twitter using the letter X

Elon Musk has unveiled further changes for Twitter, announcing his plans to replace the iconic blue bird logo with the letter "X." An interim new logo was set to go live on Sunday, and Musk revealed that the URL "X.com" would now redirect users to Twitter.

These alterations represent the most significant changes to the platform since Musk's acquisition last year, potentially marking a new era for Twitter. Musk envisions transforming it into a versatile super app, offering various services from online banking to video messaging.

Twitter CEO Linda Yaccarino expressed enthusiasm for this transformation, stating on Twitter that "X will be the platform that can deliver, well... everything."

Musk's ambition for an "everything app" has been likened to China's ubiquitous WeChat app, which seamlessly integrates into daily life for communication, news consumption, shopping, payments, and more.

However, some social media experts doubt Musk's ability to deliver on this vision. Jennifer Grygiel, a professor at the University of Syracuse, believes that Musk's track record may undermine user trust, making it challenging to convince them to embrace financial transactions on the platform. Musk's decisions, such as removing blue checks, laying off Twitter staff, and reinstating problematic accounts, have impacted Twitter's integrity.

Jeffrey Blevins, a journalism professor at the University of Cincinnati, agrees that Musk has disappointed a significant portion of Twitter's user base. He suggests that rebranding could be a way to save the platform by essentially dismantling it and recreating it as something new.

Musk's affinity for the letter "X" has been a long-standing curiosity, though he has never provided a definitive explanation. He previously named his online bank "X.com," which later became PayPal after a merger with a competitor. The letter "X" is also associated with Tesla's third electric car model and Musk's spaceflight company, SpaceX. In 2020, Musk and his then-partner, the Canadian musician Grimes, named their youngest son "X Æ A-12."
